As I reflect on the YMM Election 2017 results, I am overcome with a sense of gratitude and humility and also a renewed optimism and sense of responsibility.
I am deeply honoured and blessed to have been again chosen by our community to represent residents on Council and the Fort McMurray Catholic School District Board of Trustees for the next four years. We have faced some serious challenges together over the last few years and I’m looking forward to continuing to work on your behalf to make our home and even better place to live.
I want to thank all those that voted in this year’s election – whether it was for me or another candidate – and to my supporters and volunteers – I can’t thank you enough for all that you did to continue our journey together.
I am saddened to say goodbye (at least around the horseshoe) to Councillor Lance Bussieres and Councillor Julia Cardinal, as well as Councillor Allan Vinni as he ran for Mayor. I was honoured to work with these community-minded individuals but I know they’ll find other – and maybe even better – ways to serve our residents. Thank you Lance, Julia and Al for everything we learned from your contributions over the last four years and beyond.
To our new representatives, from Mayor-elect Don Scott to our new Councillors Jeff Peddle, Krista Balsom, Mike Allen, Verna Murphy, Bruce Inglis and Sheila Lalonde, I look forward to working with all of you as we take steps to better the community. To Councillors Phil Meagher, Claris Voyageur and Jane Stroud – welcome back!
The next four years will bring new challenges, issues and opportunities. While I am dedicated to working with my colleagues, our residents and stakeholders and municipal administration to fulfilling my election commitments, I am more interested in ensuring we find ways to collaborate and listen and learn from each other.
We won’t always agree on everything but if we all come to the table with the idea that our families, friends and neighbours come first, then we are truly giving it our best shot and there are many things we can do together to do what’s right by our bosses – our residents.
To Melissa Sheldon whom I joined in a campaign in 1998 congratulations and the very best from the retired public life. I’m proud we got the serve together, thanks for your contribution to making our region what is today. To Tyran, a friend for a century, all the best to you and Cali on your move, starting the next chapter of you lives.
In any election campaign we are reminded of what’s most important in life: family and community. I want to take this opportunity to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late John Dunsworth, best known for his role as Mr. Jim Lahey on the hit series Trailer Park Boys.
To honour and celebrate Mr. Dunsworth’s life and in celebration of our election victory together, we will be holding a Cheeseburger Picnic with special guest Bubbles Junior on Saturday from 8:30-9:30 p.m. at East Village Pub and Eatery in Eagle Ridge. I hope to see you there.
